When you blow out a candle it naturally smokes a little, until it is fully extinguished. A wick dipper allows you push the wick back down into the soft wax, depriving it of oxygen. No smoke, no carbon, no mess! Then you use it once again to free and straighten the wick for relighting. Very popular in the 1800s, they were required equipment in any home and decorated to suit.
